Fluorite
Fluorite is a mineral composed of Calcium Fluoride. Fluorite is an extraordinary creation of Nature, beautiful and luminous, soft and glassy, often vibrant in color, with an internal structure of order and perfection that resonates with the human mind like no other crystal.
Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride and is a member of the Halide family. It is transparent to translucent with a vitreous luster, and crystallizes in well-formed isometric cubes, nodules, clusters, or in massive form. It is the only common mineral with perfect cleavage in four directions, a characteristic that may be visible to the naked eye in clear stones as subtle etchings permeating the entire crystal. This cleavage frequently produces perfect octahedrons, and more rarely dodecahedrons and other complex forms, including penetration twins as if one cube were growing into or out of another. Fluorite is the reference mineral for a hardness of four on the Mohs Hardness Scale, making it too soft for everyday wear as a gem, though it is carved into wonderful faceted stones and sold as collector’s specimens or used in jewelry that is not subject to impact or abrasion. Hailed as “the most colorful mineral in the world,” Fluorite forms in a wide variety of hues, typically purple, green, yellow, blue, and in pure form – colorless, though specimens of pink, red, white, brown and black also occur. It is frequently multi-colored with bands, or zones, of color that intermingle. Impurities, exposure to radiation, and voids in the color centers determine Fluorite’s color and help give it a wonderful luminous quality. Its crystals were some of the first specimens studied for the phenomenon of “fluorescence,” which was named for Fluorite, and are thought to be caused when trace amounts of yttrium, cerium, europium, or other rare earth elements substitute for calcium in the mineral structure. Some varieties of Fluorite may also be phosphorescent, thermoluminescent and/or triboluminescent. [www.mindat.org][geology.com][en.wikipedia.org][www.controverscial.com][Fernie, 148]
Fluorite occurs in large deposits in many locations around the world, most commonly as vein fillings in rocks that have been subjected to hydrothermal activity and contain metallic ores such as Lead, Zinc, Silver, Galena, or Sphalerite. It may also be associated with Barite, Quartz and Calcite, among others, and is often a primary or secondary mineral in marbles, granites, dolostone and limestone. Originally known as Fluorspar or Fluorospar, Fluorite is primarily an industrial mineral with a low melting point deriving its name from the Latin fleure, meaning “to flow,” and refers to its use as a flux in the steel and aluminum smelting processes. It has numerous uses in the ceramic and chemical industries as a source of fluoride, fluorine and hydrofluoric acid, and for use in glazes, enamels and specialty glass. High quality Fluorite is also used in making top grade optical lenses for cameras, microscopes, and telescopes. The term “Fluorspar” is still commonly used in the industrial and chemical trades, while “Fluorite” is used for mineralogical, lapidary and most other references. Fluorite boosts the immune system and stimulates the regeneration and restructuring of cells and DNA, particularly in the skin and respiratory tract, and heals ulcers and wounds. Fluorite strengthens bone tissue, and alleviates rheumatism, arthritis and spinal injuries. It improves the discomfort of shingles and other nerve-related pain.
Fluorite encourages and sustains the flawless ideal of health, intellect and emotional well-being by purifying, restructuring, or eliminating anything within the physical or subtle bodies that is not in perfect order. It may be used to dispel disorders at the beginning of symptoms, and is regarded as a natural antiviral, immune stimulator, and anti-inflammatory agent. [Melody, 277][Hall En, 177][101 Hall, 90]
It is highly beneficial to the skin, mucous membranes and respiratory tract, and may be utilized to dissipate symptoms of colds and flu, sinusitis, bronchitis, dry cough, emphysema and pneumonia, as well as staph and strep infections, canker sores and herpes, ulcers, shingles and nerve-related pain. Fluorite may also be used in treatments of violent or highly infectious disease, as well as a protective preventative for those who work with infected patients. [Melody, 277-278][Hall En, 177][Gienger, 39-40]
Fluorite is particularly strengthening for the teeth and bones, and assists in ameliorating osteoporosis, posture damage and deformities. It helps reduce pain, swelling and inflammation associated with arthritis, rheumatism, gout, and bone-related injury, and can be used to restore mobility and relieve spasms. [Fernie, 147][Ahsian, 160][Hall En, 177][101 Hall, 90][Gienger, 39-40]
Fluorite is an exceptional crystal for relieving mental illness and disturbances of brain wave frequencies by increasing the electrical charge of brain cells and balancing the brain’s chemistry. It assists in issues of dizziness and vertigo, as well as balance and coordination. If worn day and night for several months, Fluorite can also assist in healing distortions in personality, intelligence and character that are often linked and prohibit one from leading a full life. This is a very helpful article on fluorite and its healing properties. I enjoyed reading about how this crystal can bring peace, positivity, and heart-opening vibrations1. I also learned about how different colors of fluorite can have different effects on the chakras, such as green fluorite for the heart chakra and purple fluorite for the third eye and crown chakras23. I think fluorite is a wonderful crystal for anyone who wants to cleanse their energy and enhance their intuition. Fluorite is one of the sixty different precious and semi-precious stones that they work with. Fluorite is a very familiar and widely available mineral that is found in a variety of colors; green, blue, purple, yellow, clear and most beautifully a rainbow mix of several of these colors together. It is often found growing in a naturally formed octahedron shape as well as in cubes and dodecahedrons, all of which are basic shapes of creation1.
